The disruption caused by Hurricane Ian, particularly in downtown Naples, definitely muddied the waters this season. The gig is Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 6:30 to 8:30 on the patio at The Village Spot, the restaurant of the Village Walk community on the south side of Vanderbilt Beach Road, just to the west of I-75. Hopefully it will be after any rainy season popup storms and getting into the cool of the evening.

When you come, tell them at the gate you are going to the restaurant, they wave you right through.
There are rumors that Fats Waller wrote this song. Fats was known to sell songs for $100 when he was short on cash. I think Jimmy McHugh might have been his main beneficiary. In some biography, Fats' son said that whenever Fats heard this song he would get an odd scowl on his face.

I don't think this is going into a set list. Even w an instrumental verse intro & repeating the bridge & last verse w an outro, it is only coming in at 1:45. Too short.

Previous SongOfTheDay was the 1938 version of 'tennessee whiskey', comparing 1's lover to alcoholic beverages. This 1 compares 1's lover to food, LOL! Even worse, IMO. The phrase "blue plate of romance" is a good 1. ;-P

Nice place, very folksy, very comfortable interior; large, mostly covered patio out back. Great people, and thanks to my minder Marty & bartender David! Always a pleasure to work with professionals.

I set up in a rear corner of the patio facing towards the building. The sound was good, I could keep the volume fairly low.

Thanks to my Canadian friends Owen & Sheila Evans for coming out & taking some pix.

I was in the setting sun for quite a while, but there were breezes & fans blowing, so I was not uncomfortable.

I worked from a new set list, 1/3 Jaz Dumoz, 1/3 Jim Dumas, 1/3 Steve & Chris. After the 1st set, my minder Marty told me to play faster stuff, which I did - I just started skipping the slow songs. Then on my 2nd break, I pulled up some more faster tunes. I played a total of 44 songs.

I asked Marty why she wanted faster songs, she said that the slow songs made people sad. She'd rather they be upbeat, both the songs & the patrons. Interesting, playing in dance bands, it was usually like 3-4 fast songs to 1 slow. I had thought dinner music would be maybe more 50-50, but, apparently not.

When I played all Jaz Dumoz music in Lexington, I was told by a couple of people that I should not play so many slows. Not what I was expecting. I really don't notice slow songs "bringing me down" - I just enjoy when they are pretty songs, regardless of tempo. So maybe I'm different from most in that. I will keep evolving the set lists towards more fast songs.

The songs that do "bring me down" are generally in a minor key. I deprecated "i love paris" & "let's face the music and dance" because both struck me as ominous & foreboding, i.e., anxiety-producing, & NOT romantic, my goal. ;->

I had requests for:

Eagles. Did "lyin' eyes", "desperado", & "tequila sunrise". I think better would be "take it easy" and "peaceful, easy feeling".

Willie Nelson. Did "you were always on my mind" & "without a song".

"sweet caroline". The audience did their standard parts, I always love audience participation.

Several patrons wanted to know how often I played there & when I'd be back, that was appreciated. Hopefully it will be soon, although "soon" at this point is probably next season. Looking forward to it!
Jaz Dumoztag:jazdumoz.com,2005:Post/69474382022-04-13T13:59:45-04:002022-04-13T13:59:45-04:00New and Improved!
I had ordered 150 of my most excellent business cards, designed by aspiring freelance artist Rose Konopka (rosegenevievek@gmail.com), as described here.
1st, <a contents=""i've got a feeling i'm falling"" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="https://youtu.be/NyhVzJYM6As" target="_blank">"i've got a feeling i'm falling", 1929, added to the book 2021-05-27. #SongOfTheDay 2021-10-05.
"Hey Mister Parson, stand by".

2nd, "i'm sitting on top of the world", 1925, added to the book 2021-06-06.
"Glory, hallelujah, I just phoned the parson
'Hey, Par, get ready to call!'"

3rd, "i'm crazy 'bout my baby (and my baby's crazy 'bout me)", 1936, added to the book 2021-10-27. #SongOfTheDay 2021-12-18.
"Parson, get your book out".

A wider range of dates on these songs than I would have expected. I would have thought parson references would have been a fad/meme with a shorter lifespan.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

It looks odd now, but it was by design: no new songs were entered from 2021-07-02 thru 2021-09-19. I had started booking gigs and was spending all my playing time practicing the set lists.

Jaz Dumoztag:jazdumoz.com,2005:Post/68454882021-12-18T18:42:32-05:002021-12-22T09:01:15-05:00i'm crazy 'bout my baby (and my baby's crazy 'bout me)
Song of the Day: i'm crazy 'bout my baby (and my baby's crazy 'bout me), 1936, Fats Waller.

Louis Armstrong covered the song in 1955.

Leon Redbone covered the song in 1994.

So, 19 years Fats => Louis. 39 years Louis => Leon. 27 years Leon => me.

Clearly a song with some legs. Like so many Fats songs, the song is upbeat, happy, playful, and very fun to perform.

I grew up playing classical and electric guitars. I have never met a steel stringed 14 fret acoustic that I enjoyed playing.

1 Sunday at Cora Lee's open mic at Cosmic Charlie's at its cursed National Ave location, there was an old guy - Charlie Wethington, I think - playing an electric classical (nylon stringed) guitar.

I gotta get me 1 of those!

So Steve went with me to Wilcutt Guitars. They had 2 Fenders and 2 of another brand. The Fender CN-240 SCE Thinline sounded 2x as good as the others, so I bought 1. I found a nice matching strap at Willis Music, which used to have the largest local collection of straps.

Dark blond, with a woven floral rosette in gold and black. I played this in Steve and Chris from then on.

Jaz Dumoz was born around the start of the pandemic, spring 2020. When I was getting ready for my 1st Jaz gig, summer 2021, I realized I needed another of these guitars. I always like n+1 redundancy when I'm playing. Additionally, the nylon strings take weeks to get broken in. If I was gigging regularly and needed to change strings, I needed a 2nd guitar with its strings already broken in - 2 guitars kept in rotation.

I was back in Lexington and just figured I'd go to Wilcutts' and buy another 1. No luck, Fender quit making them.

So I turned to my friend, incredible guitarist Lindsay Olive, to find me one on eBay. He is very eBay-savvy.

He found one still in the factory box, about the same price I had paid before. So he got it for me.

I was expecting it to be identical to the other one. It was not: natural vs dark blond finish, and a very elegant, simple rosette, a ring of mother-of-pearl looking stuff. I found a great strap for it at etsy.com.

I was thinking, I would make this the primary Jaz Dumoz guitar. The older 1 I had played with Steve. Plus the beautiful blue strap matched my eyes ;->

Here's where the plot thickens. I'm practicing on the new guitar, the James Smith solo to "honeysuckle rose", trying to play an F and an F6 at the 13th fret. My hand is getting jammed in the cutaway?!?!?

I try it on the old guitar - no problem?!?!? I start measuring the guitars. The bodies are of a size, but look at the cutaways:

On the old (top) guitar, the farthest spot on the cutaway is between the 17th & 18th frets.

On the new (under) guitar, the farthest spot on the cutaway is between the 15th & 16th frets!

So 2 frets difference in accessibility up the neck, ~1.5" Here's me playing the F6 on the old guitar. There is not 1.5" separation between the side of my hand and the cutaway.

It turns out the new guitar is a CN-140 SCE Thinline, not a CN-240 like the older guitar.

My 1st thought was that this was no good, I wanted the guitars to be equally capable. So I'd thought that I'd get another CN-240 and then sell the CN-140. There are more CN-240s on eBay, and you can see from the pictures that they have the same rosette and cutaway as mine.

But, I like the variety of the 2 guitars I have now. And so far, only 1 song out of ~150 where the smaller cutaway caused a problem - and not a fatal problem, you can grab the F chords, it's just a little harder. Other than that, they play pretty much identically.

So for now, I'll stick with these 2. That can of course be changed down the road.

This was the original French recording of the song. In 1950, several artists, including Edith and Louis Armstrong, recorded the song in English. I included the kiss and "C'est la vie." at the end from Edith's 1950 English version.

The Louis Armstrong version of the song was Song of the Day October 26, 2020. Edith's English version included an interlude, Louis's didn't.

I got a copyright claim on YouTube for this song. From Sony, for infringing on "La Vie En Rose, Live (2012)". 1947 is 74 years ago??? I thought copyright was 70 years, apparently it's 95. Still, claiming I'm infringing on a 2012 recording I've never heard of, copying a 1947 song seems incongruous. I contested the claim. An interesting exercise, hopefully I won't lose my YouTube channel.
